From the moment the guys hit the stage, there was an undeniable energy that bounced off each member of the band.

I base my opinion solely on the band’s performance at Bogart’s in Cincinnati, OH this past Tuesday night. Obviously, I have no inside access to the world of Stone Temple Pilots. Bennington joined the band on stage in 2013 and has been the voice of the band ever since. The reason for the rejuvenation of the legendary STP is the new blood of new singer, Chester Bennington (Linkin Park). In 2015, Stone Temple Pilots are stronger now as they have ever been…and seemingly happier than they have been in a long time too. I begin with this brief history not to be dramatic, but rather to reinforce the point I am about to make. As history tells us, this is a very dangerous decision for a band to make, and has been the end of many groups. In early 2013, the DeLeo brothers, along with Kretz made a decision to remove the stumbling block from their path when they dismissed their long time lead singer. While there is a saying that there is no such thing as bad press, the guys in STP may disagree.

While the band managed to release consistently strong music throughout the years, a lot of their head lines were not for their music. Despite immense success since their debut album, “Core,” in 1992, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz have faced their share of stumbling blocks along the way, most from within their own ranks. These four songs aren’t enough to salvage a fairly pedestrian debut, but they do find STP to be nimble rock craftsmen when inspiration hits. Then, there’s the slow acoustic crawl of “Creep” that works as well as anything on AIC’s Sap and, finally, “Plush,” a majestic album rock revival more melodic and stylish than anything grunge produced outside of Nirvana itself. “Sex Type Thing” may have a clumsy anti-rape lyric that comes across as misogynist, but it survives on its terrifically lunk-headed riff, while “Wicked Garden” is a surprisingly effective piece of revivalist acid rock. If that’s all that Core was, it’d be as forgettable as Seven Mary Three, but there are the hits that propelled it up the charts, songs that have remarkably stood the test of time to be highlights of their era. To be fair, it’s more that they share the same influences as their peers than being overt copycats, but it’s still a little disheartening all the same. Furthermore, even if it rocks pretty hard, it’s usually without much character, sounding like cut-rate grunge.

It is true that the worst moments of Core play like a parody of the Seattle scene - titles like “Dead and Bloated” and “Crackerman” tell you that much, playing like really bad Alice in Chains parodies, and the entire record tends to sink into gormless post-grunge sludge. Stone Temple Pilots were positively vilified once their 1992 debut, Core, started scaling the charts in 1993, pegged as fifth-rate Pearl Jam copyists. “…With Eric Kretz bashing the skins like a Bonham manque and axeman Robert DeLeo ladling murk, CORE is a testosteronefest…” – Rolling Stone The acclaimed single, “Plush” won the band a GRAMMY Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
